When did you join Expleo?

February 2020.

How was your first day at Expleo?

It was absolutely fine because I had been contracting with them for probably five or six years previously, so I knew exactly what I was getting into. I was already working onsite with Airbus when the transition happened and it went smoothly.

What does a typical day look like for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer?

Morning
I start my day by checking our email traffic, then I attend our daily team meeting, which forms my daily comms. This is the opportunity for the Manufacturing Engineering team to highlight any issues, also it allows me to share information with the team and assign tasks for the day.
Mid-morning
Usually customer review meetings, discussing individual projects and performance, along with internal progress. I also have ad hoc or pre-arranged meetings with customers or internal entities.
Noon
We usually plan pre-kick off meetings with the management team, to understand the requirements for mission card quotes.
After lunch
I work on detailed documentation of production processes, quality standards, and performance metrics. Also generate reports summarising key performance indicators, project milestones, and areas for improvement as well as conducting PLM reviews.
Mid-Afternoon
I solve unexpected challenges during production that could include troubleshooting issues, identifying root causes, and implementing effective solutions to minimise downtime and maintain productivity.
End of day
Ensuring that loose ends are tied up, updating trackers, making sure the management team is up-to-date with the current progress, and filing emails.

What about Expleo do you enjoy the most?

At Expleo, I appreciate that you’re not just a number; management is approachable, and HR is supportive. It’s a refreshing change from some places where senior management can be unapproachable. Plus, I’ve had opportunities like representing the company at air shows, where I got to meet some great people from different teams. I went to the Farnborough Air Show, the Bangalore Air Show in India and the Paris Air Show, where I met Rajesh, our CEO who is a very approachable person.

What do you like most about your job?

I like meeting the diverse people and cultures, also knowing that I am contributing to the success of the company and brand.

How did Expleo help you grow your career?

When I joined Expleo, I was the only Manufacturing Engineer in the Saltney office,  since then I’ve been the main Account Manager for Airbus Manufacturing Engineering. From there we have built the team up with a variety of personnel with mixed disciplines. As a result of this, and some hard work, I’m now splitting my time as Engineering Team Leader and Capability Lead for ME. In four years, I have come a long way, both personally and professionally. Expleo give you the tools to progress.

How does Expleo provide you an environment to thrive?

  • Autonomy & Support
I like meeting the diverse people and cultures, also knowing that I am contributing to the success of the company and brand.
  • Local & International
We’re not a small company by any means; we’ve got multiple offices all around the world, including India, France, the UK, and many more. We tackle significant projects, we’ve even sent a nanosatellite to space.
  • Expertise & Creativity

I can use my knowledge in nuclear projects, in the defence sector, working on submarines, and in military projects too. We’re quite diverse within manufacturing, engineering, and design. Expleo offers expertise, while you contribute creative and design skills.

Because I’ve worked on electrics, structures, and across multiple different departments and products when someone asks me questions, most of the time, I know the answers, or I know what expert to go and speak to within the business.

  • Performance & Responsibility
Performance is my responsibility, so I’ve got to keep on top of the team. I’ve got to make sure that our weekly, if not daily figures, meet our targets. If they’re don’t, then I’m accountable. It’s my responsibility to ensure that we deliver quality.

What advice would you give to other Manufacturing Engineers considering applying to Expleo?

It’s not an easy ride, but we’re working for the greater good, and we’re all one team. We’re all responsible for finishing the projects and contributing equally We don’t expect anyone to just sit and put their feet up, but we understand that people work at different speeds and have different outputs. We’ve got a good social side to the office as well, at least once a month we go out for a meal or go and let our hair down. We’re more than just a team, we look after each other.

What is your name and your role and how long have you been working at Expleo?

This year I’m celebrating my 12th year at Expleo. I started my career at Expleo as a Quality Auditor contractor, and then was offered a Staff position in the Life Cycle Management team, where I became a Deputy Team Lead, after which there was another promotion opportunity to an Engineering Manager, and later I was able to join our Marine division where I currently work.

Where and how long did you serve in the armed forces?

I served in the Air Force just shy of 25 years. I started my career as an Aero Engines Mechanic. My first posting was at Brize Norton working on VC 10s, Tri Stars & Hercules Aircraft. Then I went on to a technician’s course and became a Junior Technician, and then progressed into a leadership position as a Sergeant. I left the Air Force as a Senior Non-commissioned Officer.

What challenges did you have after leaving the Armed Forces?

My main challenge was worrying about Job Security. My manager was very supportive when I was still a contractor at Expleo and he transferred me over from contractor to permanent staff. I remember the conversation I had with him about the opportunities for secure job security and promotion.

And he said: “At Expleo, opportunities are out there for you, so go and get them”. And he was right, there are plenty of opportunities at Expleo. You just have to seize them. And every time I saw an opportunity at Expleo, I just went for it.

I transferred a lot of my skills over to Expleo. For instance, the aircraft and engine experience, experience in fault diagnosis, and more in-depth engineering project management and of course my leadership & Management Skills

How did Expleo help you to transition into your civilian job?

I found it quite an easy transition, as there were a lot of ex-forces colleagues within Expleo when I joined, some of which I knew already. For those that didn’t have a military background they were equally as welcoming.

How do you feel Expleo allows you to use your expertise you gained during your service?

Expleo gave me the freedom to use my transferable skills that I gained in the Air Force. My manager and colleagues had an open mindset for my ideas. I could bring those ideas into the office and illustrate how they could be implemented within a business setting They very much welcomed my ideas about improvements, and there is always an open environment for sharing ideas and previous knowledge. I also completed an Expleo Leadership Management course, which differed to the one I had in the Air Force. Combining the two gave me a much more rounded leadership and management mindset.

How do you connect with other members of the Armed Forces Community at Expleo?

I participate in careers transition workshops supporting recruiters. When Ex-Forces are looking for a new career, I attend the workshops chatting to the Armed Forces community sharing my experience and what I have learned.

What advice would you give to other members of the Armed Forces Community who are planning to join Expleo?

Expleo has many different opportunities, whether it be leadership management, various jobs in engineering, project management etc. Don’t think that you don’t have the skill set to join Expleo. It is within you; you do have those skills and Expleo can bring out these skills in people.
