When did you join Expleo?

January 2023.

How was your first day at Expleo?

It was an interesting first day. I was very pleasantly surprised with the laptop, the phone, the bag and the umbrella and everything I received. I felt very much welcomed and everything was organised, ready to go, and it all pretty much worked on the first attempt. Everything was there ready for me.

What’s a typical day in the life of a Change Manager like?

As a Project Manager, you’re always trying to make sure that everyone else has got something to do and you’re facilitating everyone else’s job. So, part of that is talking to your team. Make sure they know what they’re doing, where they’re going, and what they need to achieve and dealing with any blockers or issues they may have.

Morning
The day starts with stand-up where the team discusses what we’re doing, where we’re going and what we’re going to try and achieve that day.
Mid-morning
I join planning calls with my team, where we discuss work, make decisions and resolve issues. If you're running multiple projects, these calls can happen three to four times a week.
Noon
At noon, I try and go for a 20-minute walk with my dog to get a bit of fresh air and I quite often solve problems when I'm out walking. So even though I'm not technically working I'm still thinking about things and finding solutions. I find that healthy and helpful.
After lunch
I have another review call and then I start working on the next deadline, the next report, or the next task I must work towards.
Mid-Afternoon
Creating client presentations, reviewing reports, looking for data, trying to solve any issues. I also have client facing project reviews, stakeholder management, making sure that all stakeholders are informed about the ongoing developments. Project management is about communication. Does everybody know what they need to know? Has everyone been made aware of what's gone wrong and what's gone right? Does everyone know that a decision has been made?
End of day
I have end of day calls and looking into what we succeeded that day. Checking in with the team, making sure everyone's okay, carrying out my career manager responsibilities by speaking with my direct reports.

I go to the office sometimes, so I try to arrange some meetings face-to-face, but I really enjoy hybrid working.

Some clients work fast whilst others go quite slowly, so you need to make sure you’re keeping pace with that as you go through your work.

What about Expleo do you enjoy the most?

The people I’ve met. I’ve been introduced to bright and very experienced people, and everyone seems to be happy about what they’re doing and that just makes it a nice place to be. At Expleo we’re in a lucky position because the work is interesting and so are the people

What do you like most about your job?

I like to get things done since I’m delivery focused. My greatest satisfaction is when I get a team of people delivering well, which happens quite often at Expleo. As a group, we can generate a really good output.

How did Expleo help you grow your career?

In the last two years I’ve learnt so much and have earnt respect as a trusted advisor which is the result of continued learning and consistently achieving great results.

Do you think Expleo is a great place to work and if so why?

I do think it’s a great place to work; there’s a good collection of people here. It’s a global organisation, but it’s also small enough to know most people and reach out to the leadership team including the business directors, the business unit actors, and sales team members.

Can you summarise what the Expleo’ Employer Brand pillars mean to you?

  • Autonomy & Support
If I have a good idea, I can promote it and receive the support to do so. A good example is that I’ve created a Programme Management Office pod that didn’t exist before. I assembled the relevant teams; and collaboratively we formulated and implemented a proposal
  • Local & International
It’s small enough to be able to see everything and know everyone in the local office but big enough to work on international projects with other teams from around the globe.
  • Expertise & Creativity
My colleagues are all switched on, they know what they’re doing, and I can trust them to get things done.I’ve been working for nearly 30 years, and I’ve gained a lot of experience working for different companies, it’s great that Expleo values me for my expertise that I contribute to my clients and the company. It’s nice to feel valued as an expert.
  • Performance & Responsibility
I’ve been given the appropriate level of responsibility to look after industryleading clients.

What advice would you give to other change managers considering applying to Expleo?

They’re great people to work with and interesting clients to work for and Expleo provides recognition for good work, and I feel there’s opportunity to progress within the company. I’ve really enjoyed my first 12 months. I had some interesting things to do, worked with great people and clients. Therere always new things happening that will mean that we’ll grow, and we’ll have plenty of work going forward

What is your name and your role and how long have you been working at Expleo?

This year I’m celebrating my 12th year at Expleo. I started my career at Expleo as a Quality Auditor contractor, and then was offered a Staff position in the Life Cycle Management team, where I became a Deputy Team Lead, after which there was another promotion opportunity to an Engineering Manager, and later I was able to join our Marine division where I currently work.

Where and how long did you serve in the armed forces?

I served in the Air Force just shy of 25 years. I started my career as an Aero Engines Mechanic. My first posting was at Brize Norton working on VC 10s, Tri Stars & Hercules Aircraft. Then I went on to a technician’s course and became a Junior Technician, and then progressed into a leadership position as a Sergeant. I left the Air Force as a Senior Non-commissioned Officer.

What challenges did you have after leaving the Armed Forces?

My main challenge was worrying about Job Security. My manager was very supportive when I was still a contractor at Expleo and he transferred me over from contractor to permanent staff. I remember the conversation I had with him about the opportunities for secure job security and promotion.

And he said: “At Expleo, opportunities are out there for you, so go and get them”. And he was right, there are plenty of opportunities at Expleo. You just have to seize them. And every time I saw an opportunity at Expleo, I just went for it.

I transferred a lot of my skills over to Expleo. For instance, the aircraft and engine experience, experience in fault diagnosis, and more in-depth engineering project management and of course my leadership & Management Skills

How did Expleo help you to transition into your civilian job?

I found it quite an easy transition, as there were a lot of ex-forces colleagues within Expleo when I joined, some of which I knew already. For those that didn’t have a military background they were equally as welcoming.

How do you feel Expleo allows you to use your expertise you gained during your service?

Expleo gave me the freedom to use my transferable skills that I gained in the Air Force. My manager and colleagues had an open mindset for my ideas. I could bring those ideas into the office and illustrate how they could be implemented within a business setting They very much welcomed my ideas about improvements, and there is always an open environment for sharing ideas and previous knowledge. I also completed an Expleo Leadership Management course, which differed to the one I had in the Air Force. Combining the two gave me a much more rounded leadership and management mindset.

How do you connect with other members of the Armed Forces Community at Expleo?

I participate in careers transition workshops supporting recruiters. When Ex-Forces are looking for a new career, I attend the workshops chatting to the Armed Forces community sharing my experience and what I have learned.

What advice would you give to other members of the Armed Forces Community who are planning to join Expleo?

Expleo has many different opportunities, whether it be leadership management, various jobs in engineering, project management etc. Don’t think that you don’t have the skill set to join Expleo. It is within you; you do have those skills and Expleo can bring out these skills in people.
